Building Executive Support for Implementation

During a previous assignment for this international client, Iknow developed a comprehensive KM strategy and several high-level project descriptions for specific KM initiatives.

Because knowledge management was new to the company’s senior management, they wanted to have a better understanding of the proposed projects. Specifically, they wanted to know how these projects would be conducted, how long they would take, what resources would be required, and what specific deliverables would be produced. The management team asked Iknow to prepare thorough project descriptions and detailed project plans for the top three initiatives.

For each of the three initiatives, Iknow created thorough project descriptions, estimated the resources and timing, and built detailed project workplans.

Iknow prepared three specific outputs for each of the KM projects:

  • Detailed project plans. The project plan contained an overall project Gantt chart, the overall project timeline, milestones, a list of project tasks, detailed information about each task (e.g., effort to complete the task, task duration, and predecessor tasks), the resources assigned to each task, and the outputs from each task.
  • A project charter, using the company’s internal format. The charter contained a detailed description of the project; sections included business problem, the opportunity, risks, assumptions, constraints, critical success factors, and open issues.
  • An Iknow project proposal for the next phase of work. The project proposals contained more detailed information about the project outputs, external resource requirements, and costs.

The outputs from this detailed planning exercise provided the additional background and support requested by senior management. The projects received the resources for implementation.
