A piece of software or a service that indexes pages from the web and lists those that match or closely match a user's search terms. Results are ranked by relevance or other factors and include items from sources all over the web. One of the growing problems is the “hidden” web: content that is not indexed because it is generated on the fly or held in databases. It is estimated that over four-fifths of internet content is now hidden.
